About "Required Reading"

In this 1996 lecture, written and read by Amy Tan, Amy describes why she writes: "I write because I enjoy stories and make believe, the power of words, and the lovely peculiarities of language. I write because there's a lot I don't understand about life and death, myself and the world and the great in-between . . . I write to find the questions that I should ask, and for me the stories are the possible answers, one story for each particular set of characters and circumstances."

David Phillips wrote and performs the guitar solo, "Omorpsyma." Kathi Kamen Goldmark and David Nelson edited and produced this recording, released in 1996 on the "Don't Quit Your Day Job" Records label.
