When she was eight years old, in a desperate bid to avoid choir practice, Gretchen made a bad deal with the Devil. This left her musically impaired, and she has wisely turned the music production of POTTY ANIMAL entirely over to Kathi. Gretchen took to drawing instead, and is the illustrator of the upcoming book.
She's published four picture books for children. Gretchen is the author/illustrator of CANTSEE, THE CAT WHO WAS THE COLOR OF THE CARPET (1996) and THE WATER SHELL (1995), both from Harcourt Brace, and illustrated THE MOON LADY and THE CHINESE SIAMESE CAT (1994) by Amy Tan. Published by Macmillan/Simon & Schuster, these two books have also been released on tape by Dove Audio, and THE CHINESE SIAMESE CAT was featured on "Sesame Street". Her illustrations have appeared in many textbooks and audio-visual productions from Harcourt Brace, for grades K through 5.
She is the cover artist for Amy Tan's three novels, THE JOY LUCK CLUB, THE KITCHEN GOD'S WIFE, and THE HUNDRED SECRET SENSES (Putnam). Her illustrations have appeared in many other books (COLD WEATHER COOKING by Sarah Leah Chase, Workman; FESTIVE OCCASION COOKING, Williams Sonoma series, Wendel Owens; MAN AT HIS BEST, Esquire Press) and in national magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Reader's Digest.
Gretchen's cover illustration for the paperback release of MIDLIFE CONFIDENTIAL (by and about the Rock Bottom Remainders, Viking/Plume 1994) was the original cartoon design for the t-shirts, now collectors' items, worn by the celebrity author garage band during their historic and self-indulgent "Three Chords and An Attitude" rock & roll tour. She also illustrated THE GREAT ROCK & ROLL JOKE BOOK, by Dave Marsh and Kathi Kamen Goldmark, published in October 1997 (St. Martin's Press). She also illustrated the cover for the double CD "Stranger Than Fiction".
Gretchen has been an advertising illustrator for over 25 years. An honors graduate of Art Center College of Design, she's been awarded Best of Show, San Francisco Society of Illustrators; the Cable Car Award from the San Francisco Ad Club; Award of Excellence, Communications Arts Magazine; and Print Magazine's Regional Design Annual Selection.
She lives in San Francisco with her photographer husband, Jake and Elwood (two cats with one attitude), and Rex the Wonder Dog. A closet songwriter, Gretchen has teamed up with Kathi on POTTY ANIMAL, for better or verse.
